The Future of Tek

As you may have noticed, there have been some changes around here.

And not just with the Teknidermy website, but with the whole interface customization scene. Tek exists to serve in that scene, so the changes in skinning directly affect the mag.

“Back in the day” you had to Want To Skin. You had to get out there and look for it, learn about it, maybe even give it a try yourself. But not anymore.

To use a really long metaphor, it’s like we left the door open all night so our beloved dog and cat could get in our house, but a big snake came in the house too, and ate our dog and cat, and when our kids woke up the next morning, they said “My what a Beautiful Snake!” and completely forgot that we ever had a dog and cat…

And that leaves us here, lovingly remembering the dog and cat.

Tek started out as a pure magazine, but we soon noticed the surge of visitors whenever a new issue was released, and then the site was dead for the following two months. So to make things more dynamic, J dug up the Nuke thing we currently use and, to make things more lively, we started posting news. Seeing the Nuke thing also had a link section we filled it up with links to skinnable apps.

But all that is not core Tek.

Tek is, and should more prominently be by skinners for skinners, meaning people should be able to directly comment on articles and participate. And without having to sign up first. We don't need a forum, we don't need news (we're no news agency), we don't need links to skinnable apps (we're no site directory), and we don't need a member system.

We need articles and we need up-to-date articles.

Enter the new digest system. From now on articles will be published as soon as they are done. And to wrap things up, there will be a digest “issue”, containing all articles (and perhaps some more) which appeared in the past X weeks. Tek will become a “Digest” starting now. This will be the last “issue” in our previous incarnation, and we will now part from the “subscriber format”.

We do have some ideas on what to do with news, links and current events. Imagine one big cross linked site with headlines from all skin sites, a list of recent software releases and updates, a list of current contests and more of that stuff.

We will also try to make all our past articles and interviews more accessible. Please be patient with us as the site grows and changes.

Tek now basically consists of three people. Doreen is our interview gal, Kenray does editorials and article bits, and craeonics steals newsposts from other sites and writes the occasional article. In the past others have contributed and we'd like to see that happen more often. We want you to feel free to comment, contribute, interact and participate in the process here.

At the outset of Tek, your humble editor had truly hoped, one day, to see a print magazine come of it. I sincerely doubt that will happen, at least for Tek. Perhaps someday there will be a “Visual Styles Monthly” spewing forth from Redmond, but they’ll never feature Colorpad, or interview Garoo.

So there will always be a place for a “skinners digest”.

Dig in.

Good idea, Good format, Good concept, now let's see some good Contents :) A big thanks to the three people mentionned above.

Hope to see this becoming very cool, lots of potential here.

Yeah, soooo, give us content! In the end, lack of content is the downfall of all sites. Oh, I feel like a marketeer now...

craeonics {04.02.2002|01.15}

Sell it, Crae, sell it...

Mister Bunny {04.02.2002|13.09}

Good ideas here..can't wait for the 'digest'.

There's a dozen or more people sweating to keep their application links up to date (or not). There's a dozen or more sites trying to provide you with the latest news on shells, skinning etc (or not). So it's a good idea not to waste more sweat, and fully focus. I'm curious on how to digest will occur, detailwise, and foremost, how users will be invited/enabled to deliver content. With Crae not having to hunt for news, he'll have some time left to do the title gfx (and I suspect some coding) - but/because these bunnies should stay.

this is the "Digest" Concept:

Every five to seven days, a new "Article" block will appear on the front page of Tek, l;eading to an article or interview, much like the ones in this issue. That block will stay atop all other items on the front of Tek for as long as it is the Featured Article.

At the end of 8 weeks (so we are lookign at June 1 or so) we will collect the articles fo weeks past, and maybe even a few new ones, and place them into a Digest (like an Issue is now), and publicize the Digest in the same way we have publicized each edition of Tek.

So basically, the Digest is the Collection of Articles of the last 8 week period, published on much the same schedule as the previous Tek "issue" tiemtable.

Hopefully, the new interactive state of Tek in general will encourage more submission.....

Any good 300 word rant qualifies as an Essay (hehehehehhe)...

(and i do hope Crae will have the opportunity to "dress" each article/interview as it appears...
all we need now are soem Crae-bunny 3DS objects)

kenray {04.03.2002|00.38}

let me put that another way:

"dis be da damn "Digest" Concept, dig dis:

Every nickel t' seven days, some fresh "Article" block will appaih' on da front
page o' Tek, leadin' t' some article o' interview, much likes da ones in dis
issue. Dat block will stay atop all otha' items on da front o' Tek 4 as long as
it be da damn Featured Article.

At da damn fat-lady o' 8 weeks (down low, so's we be lookign at June 1 o' so's)
we will collect da damn articles fo weeks past, an' maybe even some few fresh
ones, an' place them into some Digest (down low, likes some Issue be now), an'
publicize da damn Digest in da same way we have publicized aich edishun o' Tek.

So's basical-like, da Digest be da damn Collecshun o' Articles o' da damn last
8 week puh'iod, published on much da damn same schedule as da previous Tek
"issue" timetable.

Hopeful-like, da fresh interactive state o' Tek in general will encourage mo'
submission.....

Any ole 300 word rant qualifies as some Essay (down low, hehehehehhe)...

(down low, an' i do hope Crae got'ta da damn opportunity t' "dress" aich
article/interview as it appears... all we need now be some Crae-bunny
3-D-S objects)"

We are focussing already. I have never ever gone out and hunted for news, all news on Tek is blatantly ripped from other sites (mostly from DeskMod since that's the first one in my bookmark list), yet even that takes forever. I took me four bloody hours to whip up yesterdays newspost, @#$%!!

Anyway, I really like how [link] works. People can send in a plain text article there and it then gets published at the end of the week. Works really well, for two months is too long to wait (it is for me). And it's also a bit what I had in mind.

craeonics {04.03.2002|01.49}

As long as it looks as good as this, never was one for reading too many of the words anyway...
